This is infuriating…

…I hope Yoko sues this asshat for everything he’s worth. This was what “Cee-Lo” did to Lennon’s “Imagine” last night in Times Square, while waiting for the ball to drop.

The song is supposed to go like this:

I’m not putting “genius” in the tags, because this post is a reaction to an unforgivable gutting of Lennon’s song, rather than a reflection on John’s abilities and inspirations.

  • More Jazz Photoblogging: Sam Rivers Trio, Boston, 1976

I digitized a lot of photos over the past year, but I haven’t gotten around to putting them online. Here are some pictures from a wonderful performance by Sam Rivers’ Trio at the Jazz Workshop. Most of these were woefully underexposed; some parts of the images were restored digitally.

While I don’t feel these are my best work they nonetheless capture some of the ambience of the gig that night. Not bad for a high-school student.

Sam Rivers is a truly amazing musician who is still going strong. Here is his website.

    What We Did On Halloween…

    …Ta-daa!

My daughter stood out from the menage of Harry Potters, Cinderellas, Fairies, Ghosts and Goblins.

    My daughter was a Parasauralophus.

For purposes of comparison, here is an image of an actual Parasauralophus:

Our Parasauralophus was made with plaster-impregnated gauze wrapped around two balloons. The whole head was mounted on a Sono-Tube with slots cut for her arms. The eyes are rubber bouncy balls. Looks pretty good to me.

    Great Concert Last Night

We sold out the hall, and all the musicians played beautifully. Looks like we raised about $1200 for 350.org. (UPDATE: $1191, to be exact)

I’ll post more photos and concert videos soon.

Standing, from left: Robert Labaree (Dünya), Mehmet Ali Sanlıkol (Dünya), Gaurishankar Chandrashekhar, Durga Krishnan, Zaira Meneses, Eliot Fisk. Kneeling in front: Warren Senders.

  • Around the house…

    …on Labor Day:

the piano-tuner is tuning our ancient but newly acquired piano for the very first time. It’s like night and day; what a change!

My wife is out watering the garden.

My daughter is upstairs telling a story to herself. Later this afternoon we have a date to finish making a bed for her doll — the latest dad/kid woodworking project. With a little luck the bed will be done by the end of the day, and we can start making a mattress and bedclothes. Because a doll can’t just lie down on bare wood. That would never do.

This week everything hits the fan all at once. Private students are coming back in great numbers over the next few days, and my teaching at Tufts, Babson and New England Conservatory all begins. Major shift in activity levels.

I will be posting photos & music from our recent trip after the dust settles a bit.

  • Catching up…

…we are waiting for Hurricane Irene to hit. Lots of rain.

Yesterday I spent the whole day outside battening down the hatches, which mostly meant securing the garden. Wire screens, tarpaulins, rope, string, wire, weights. Later on I’ll put up some photos. The whole thing looks flimsy and rickety, but I suspect it’s more robust than it seems.

I’m going to go out into the gathering storm and do some cleanup before the winds get too heavy.

There may be power outages. Good thing I’m a couple of days ahead on letters. I’ll get to pictures later in the next couple of days if we have electricity.

  • Last Few Days In Pune…

…Had a great concert in Nasik; returned to Pune in time to sing again on Saturday night. Sunday morning gave a lecture-demonstration on the pedagogy of improvisation, at the Maharashtra Cultural Centre. Tomorrow morning another lec-dem on Hindustani music teaching methodology at University of Pune. Then all my professional obligations are over, mercifully.

We leave on the 24th and are both anticipating and dreading the impending 11 hour layover in Paris. We may try and go into the city and enjoy ourselves during the day. We’ll see.

For now, that’s all. I’m using my brother-in-law’s computer and don’t have time to expand.

I will post photos and audio clips once I’m back stateside.

    Cheers!

    More from Bharat…

…Here it is Tuesday night. I’m back at the cybercafe updating.

Mehfil in Mumbai went very well, with exceptionally supportive tabla playing from a young woman named Mukta Raste. A good audience, lots of appreciative daad — just the thing to get me in a good mood. I returned to Pune the next day and was promptly hammered with all the jet lag I’d been ignoring for days. I spent all Monday lying down, alternately napping and reading (Neal Stephenson’s “Quicksilver” if you’re interested). Rehearsed for Saturday’s Pune concert that night, then came back home and crashed spectacularly, falling asleep with my specs still on.

Today was a lazy day. I bought my ticket for Nasik; I will leave Thursday at noon, getting in around 5 pm. The concert there is on Friday night. Saturday night I am singing in Pune. That will be interesting, coming on top of a five-hour bus ride earlier in the day.

Now to shut down and head back home for dinner.
